Frequenty Asked Questions

What are the system requirements for the client?

- Windows (XP or greater)
- Internet Explorer 6 or higher (we recommend at least IE9 for the best experience)
- One or more Graphics Cards (AMD 5000 Series or higher recommended)
- Up-to-date Graphics card drivers. AMD Drivers, NVIDIA Drivers

What kind of computation are you doing?

At launch, all computation will be Bitcoin Mining, because it is the most valuable compute job today. We're currently working on getting other High Performance Computing work units on our network, such as Protein Folding, Gene Sequencing and Video Encoding.

Bitcoin is a distributed peer-to-peer value-transfer system. New Bitcoins are created by adding computational power to the network. Bitcoin transactions are irreversibly sealed into a permanent public record that the entire network shares and maintains. The last 10 or 20 minutes of the history of this ledger can only be undone with a greater amount of computational power than created it, which is exponentially harder the further back in history you try to undo. Because of this, the bitcoin protocol pays people to add computational power, making it harder and more expensive for people to attack the network. Part of why people think Bitcoins are valuable is because the Bitcoin network is now the world’s largest supercomputer.

CoinLab loves Bitcoin. If you’d like to learn more about Bitcoin, is a great place to start.

So, if I connect my computer, I get Keys completely for free?

Not quite. Running our client will increase the electricity consumption of your computer. If you have a top-of-the-line gaming rig and low electricity prices, you will be “buying” Keys for significantly less than you would pay for them using your Credit Card. Many of you will get some savings below face value. Many others will find it almost free, if they do not currently pay for their electricity or they pay a flat rate.

If you have old hardware or a laptop, it is likely your computer will not be efficient enough for our service. When you first run our client, you will see an earning rate for your hardware (denominated in Keys per Day). If the value in Keys is not greater than the cost of your increased electricity consumption, we do not recommend that you use our service. If you'd like help estimating your energy consumption, email us, we're happy to help.

If you don’t pay for your own electricity, you should speak with the person who does before using our service.

How does this support Uber?

Because you can help Uber make money without having to whip out a credit card! (We're looking at you, free-riders)

When you run the CoinLab Uber Client, we mine Bitcoin with your graphics card. We sell the Bitcoins you earn, buy Keys from Uber with dollars, and Uber sends your Keys to your Ubernet account.

Uber gets paid the full face value for every key you earn, so the more you run our client, the more money they make!

Which Graphics Cards perform best?

Currently, AMD graphics cards tend to earn more than NVIDIA cards. We recommend an AMD 5000 series card or better.
